Navigating between Nabucco and South Stream

Baumgarten gas hub
The moment of truth for both the EU-backed Nabucco pipeline and the Russian-backed South Stream pipeline is getting closer. Final investment decisions are expected for both projects next year (for Nabucco perhaps even at the end of this year). To most observers it is clear that the two prospective pipelines are competitive rather than complementary. They are aimed at the same (European) market and rely on partly the same sources. Whether
or not both pipes could be built profitably is uncertain. In the coming months European Energy Review will discuss the prospects of Nabucco and South Stream in a series of articles and interviews. In today’s edition, Project Control Consultant Ramiz Mammadov, who is based in Azerbaijan, looks at how Italian energy producer ENI, which is a stakeholder in South Stream, but also has an interest in bringing its own Central Asian gas to the European market, is manoeuvring to make the two pipeline projects compatible with each other.
