E.ON is the Third Largest Offshore Wind Player in the World

We are very active in offshore wind energy, and recognize its enormous potential for the future. The wind speeds at sea are far higher than on land and there is much more space available. But generating power from wind out at sea is a real technical challenge, both during the construction and operational phases of projects. E.ON is a world leader in this area, and we are currently developing a portfolio of projects in European waters. In the short term, we are focused on near-shore shallow water projects in the UK and Denmark, to build our experience and expertise. In addition, the pilot alpha ventus project in the deep water German North Sea has allowed us to build our knowledge of more challenging projects.

Offshore Wind Farms

In September 2010 E.ON opened Rödsand II offshore wind farm. Rödsand II lies between the German island of Fehmarn and the Danish island of Lolland and is currently the largest of E.ON's six offshore wind farms and one of the largest operating in the world today. With a capacity of 207 MW it provides enough clean, renewable energy for 200,000 Danish homes. Our latest wind farm in the UK, Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth of the coast of Scotland, is one of the UK's largest offshore wind farms. The 60 turbines produce enough power to supply around 117,000 homes with electricity. We began construction of Robin Rigg in 2007 and it was officially opened in 2010.

Our offshore wind park at Scroby Sands in the North Sea can generate enough energy to supply over 36,000 households (~60MWe), saving the emission of over 65,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

We are also developing London Array in the Thames Estuary in cooperation with DONG Energy and Masdar. Together both phases of the project will have a total capacity of 1,000MW, and so the London Array set to become the largest wind farm in the world. When fully completed the project will certainly be setting new standards within the industry, supplying around 750,000 UK households with energy and cutting CO2 emissions by about 1.9 million tonnes per year. Construction started in July 2009 and the first phase will be finished by 2012.

Currently, we are investing 2 billion Euros in three new offshore projects: Amrumbank West in the North sea will be our first commercial offshore wind project in German waters. With a total capacity of 288 MW it will be able to supply up to 300,000 German homes with green power each year.

Humber Gateway will be our fifth offshore wind farm operating in the UK. When commissioned in 2015, Humber Gateway will be able to provide enough power for approximately 150,000 UK homes a year. Karehamn in the Baltic Sea will have an installed capacity of 48 MW and will be our first offshore wind project in Sweden. With an annual production of over 175 GWh, Karehamn will be able to supply over 50,000 Swedish households with electricity
