RWE: More than 30 patents for e-mobility
RWE Effizienz committed to e-mobility
In-house development stimulates innovations

Feb. 25, 2015   + + +   RWE Effizienz is continuing to strengthen the company’s position as a pioneer of innovative intelligent charging technologies in the field of e-mobility. Within just a few years, the company has registered numerous technological developments in as many as 30 patent families – including some with worldwide validity. Managing director Dr Norbert Verweyen: “We are going to continue to promote the expansion of intelligent charging technology. We already offer future-oriented concepts in technology and will continue to invest in research and development.”

Intelligent charging management – on demand for each customer

The company is addressing the complete charging system, covering all the steps from a safe charging process to easy payment. Contract customers have already been using the patented billing system for the past year. RWE Effizienz was the first operator in Germany to obtain approval from the national metrology institute, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig for its billing system, which is accurate to the kWh and complies with calibration regulations. “A measurement system that has been officially approved is the fairest and most accurate form of billing for the customers. We were also able to obtain the certification from the PTB because we pursued the standardisation of the type 2 connectors from the beginning. We offer this standard at all of our stations,” explains Norbert Verweyen.

To make the system user-friendly for drivers, RWE Effizienz has independently developed various payment systems that allow for “roaming”. At present, not every electric vehicle is able to send its access data to charging infrastructure automatically. For this purpose, RWE Effizienz is offering an intelligent charging cable with the capacity to store secure user data. Moreover, even drivers without fixed contracts will be able to recharge their electric vehicles at the stations and pay using SMS, credit card or Paypal.

Because the system is based on a modular concept, charging stations can be distributed according to demand. Municipal utility partners and fleet operators can also make use of additional optional services. One example of such a service is the patented intelligent charging management system. It offers the advantage of avoiding demand peaks in the electricity grid and can also be used to prioritise the use of renewable energies.

E-mobility is to be made as simple as possible for drivers to use. The company aims to ensure this by integrating its innovative technologies in information and communication into the charging infrastructure, along with the support of a powerful IT backend. RWE Effizienz hopes to help accelerate the breakthrough of e-mobility: by making it as simple and as natural as car driving is today. For Verweyen this is an important step: “E-mobility is a significant building block in the transformation of the energy industry. The interconnection of mobility, communication and energy is already well underway.”
