MAN TURBO AG: MAN TURBO invited figures
from the spheres of politics, industry and science to mark the centenary
of the Hamburg plant and attend the presentation of the chronicle “100
Years of Steam Turbine Construction in Hamburg - from Blohm+Voss to MAN
TURBO”. The Hamburg facility for the manufacture of steam turbines,
which are used in particular in biomass power stations, waste incineration
installations and for CHP cogeneration plants, was only acquired last year.
MAN TURBO thus completed its product range for steam turbines in the lower
output category and now covers the entire spectrum from 1 to 120 MW. It was with the launch of
the light cruiser “DRESDEN” in 1907 that the 100-year-old tradition of
steam turbine construction in Hamburg commenced. The first turbine order,
placed by the Reichsmarineamt (Department of the Navy) in Berlin, was for
the first “vessel steam system with steam superheating” of the German
Imperial Navy. In his address Jürgen
Maus, chairman of the executive board of MAN TURBO, spoke about the
success of the new relationship: “We have achieved excellent progress,
as witnessed by the extremely satisfactory level of incoming orders.
Hamburg contributed over 80 million euros to the MAN TURBO Group’s order
book in 2006. Further evidence of this progress is provided by the new
jobs which are currently being created here at the Hamburg plant. The
workforce is being increased by approximately ten percent and training
capacity is also being expanded.” The
author of the chronicle, Professor Dr Otto Geisler, outlined the technical
development and special features of the steam turbines built in Hamburg
over the last 100 years. “Around 1,750 steam turbines were built in all,
with a total output of more than 5.5 million kW. The outputs of the
individual turbines were up to 45 MW, with steam pressures and
temperatures of up to 164 bar and 545 °C.” At the open day following the function, over 1,000 visitors took the opportunity to have a look round the restructured production shop. A 2,400 m2 hall has been added, bringing the total production area to 10,000 m2 and creating the optimum conditions for modern production sequences. Posted July 2, 2007 |
