Linde receives EUR 100 million contract for additional liquefied natural gas plant in Norway

The technology group The Linde Group has received an order from Skangass AS for the turnkey supply of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production plant for a site in Risavika, near Stavanger, Norway. Skangass AS is a joint venture between utility provider Lyse Gass and financial investor Celsius Invest. The contract value is approximately EUR 100 million.

The LNG plant has a production capacity of approximately 300,000 tonnes per year and will provide LNG for customers in Scandinavia and in the Baltic region from 2010. AGA Gas AB, a Linde subsidiary and market leader in industrial gases in Sweden, will use and distribute a sixth of the total LNG volume.

"This order further underlines our leading position in the field of medium-sized LNG plants", said Dr. Aldo Belloni, member of the Executive Board of Linde AG. "Furthermore, this project allows us to enter the strategically important merchant LNG market. We are thus notably benefitting from the synergies between our gases and engineering businesses." With the Melkøya project in Hammerfest - Europe's largest LNG plant which will begin production soon - The Linde Group has realised another crucial LNG beacon project in Norway.

Thanks to a highly energy efficient liquefaction process developed by Linde the new plant will create far less emissions than other comparable units. Demand for LNG is currently rising by approximately 10 percent per year, mainly as a replacement for other less environmentally friendly fossil fuels. The new plant is accordingly designed to double its capacity if necessary.

The Linde Group is a world-leading industrial gases, medical gases and engineering company with around 49,000 employees working in more than 70 countries worldwide. Following the acquisition of The BOC Group plc, the company has gases and engineering sales of around EUR 12 billion per annum. The strategy of The Linde Group is geared towards earnings-based growth and focuses on the expansion of its international business with forward-looking products and services.
