Oil treatment centre standardises on
KROHNE's Optimass
Wellingborough-based KROHNE’s OPTIMASS Coriolis Mass flowmeters have
been installed by oil company OJSC "Ulyanovskneft" at two
loading stations at the Ulyanovsk oil fields in Russia. The instruments
are being used in a variety of applications to measure the volume and mass
flow of crude oil.
OJSC "Ulyanovskneft" operates 24 oil fields at Ulyanovsk with an
estimated oil output of 380,000 tons per year. The company has one of the
most advanced oil treatment systems, two of which are installed at oil
loading and unloading stations located at Vishenki and Novospasskoe. The
OPTIMASS flowmeters are built into these systems.
These stations ensure that the right amount of stock oil is loaded into
tanker cars, accurately measuring the oil by mass and volume. This is
carried out regardless of factors that affect the density, flow and
viscosity of the oil, such as ambient temperature and its condition and
consistency. The system is also designed to minimise leaks.
Prior to being loaded onto tanker cars, the raw oil stock is heated to 40°C
and has an average viscosity of 40 cSt and a density of 850 kg/m³.
The OPTIMASS flowmeters simultaneously monitor the temperature and density
of the crude oil. Data from the instrument is transmitted via Modbus to a
central control room which allows operators to monitor the loading process
effectively. Users enter the amount of oil that needs to be transferred
into the tanker cars and the system ensures that the precise amount is
loaded.
Operators can perform diagnostic inline checks on the flowmeter to ensure
the system is working correctly. This can include, for example, analysis
of the quality of measurement.
The oil treatment systems were installed as part of a major investment to
improve environmental performance at the plant.
KROHNE developed the world’s first Coriolis mass flowmeter with a single,
straight-tube design. The OPTIMASS was launched in 2002 incorporating this
innovative development. It also includes KROHNE’s patented AST®
(Adaptive Sensor Technology) design, which ensures stable operation under
varying process conditions without special installation requirements.
