KROHNE's ultrasonic flowmeters at the heart of oil
transporting in the port of Rotterdam
The 'Maasvlakte Olie Terminal' (MOT) performs an important function in
the logistics chain between oil producers and refineries. In particular,
it distributes the delivered crude oil to the connected companies. The
port of Rotterdam is accessible to large ships, due to its outstanding
maritime infrastructure. The vast majority of crude oil is delivered to
the MOT in supertankers, i.e. in ships with a capacity of approx. 400,000
tons DW and a draught of more than 22 meters. The handling capacity and an
extensive subterranean network of pipelines for transporting crude oil
present the partners with particularly appealing conditions.
Since 1986, KROHNE’s ultrasonic flowmeters have been measuring the crude
oil as it is off-loaded from ships. The flowmeters are installed directly
on the jetties. They are 350 mm in diameter. They are also used to control
the sampling devices. The composition of the ship's load can be precisely
determined using proportional sampling. This data is important for the
further processing of the crude oil.
At the MOT, a depletion schedule is provided for the important and
critical parts such as the ultrasonic flowmeters. In this context,
flowmeters that have been in operation for 20 years are replaced by the
new type of device from KROHNE: the UFM 3030. The UFM 3030 is a 3-beam
ultrasonic flowmeter, which offers even better performance thanks to
expertise and 30 years of experience with ultrasonic flowmeters. The
flowmeters can be quickly swapped, because the installation dimensions
have not changed. The measuring quality has increased still further thanks
to an integrated third measuring path.
With the new flowmeters, the MOT is ready to measure crude oil for another
20 years, maintenance-free.
