ILF Designs Gas Storage Facilities in England

ILF - in partnership with UK’s leading oil and gas contractor Costain - has been appointed by Ineos to develop a front end engineering defintion for leaching and gas storage facilities in Cheshire, UK. This phase of the project involves developing the definition to a point where an EPC contract can be tendered.
As one of the main suppliers of brine in the UK, Ineos wishes to develop underground cavities specifically for gas storage. In total, 28 caverns shall be leached from 2009 to 2018 with the brine being consumed by the local chemical industry. The first caverns will be converted to gas in 2012 with the final caverns being converted in 2018. After leaching each cavern will have a volume of approximately 300.000 m3 (cubic meters). The maximum gas pressure in the caverns will be 95 bar and the storage facility will be capable of delivering in its final stage 1.420.000 Sm3/h (standard cubic meters of gas per hour) to the national grid.

ILF is responsible for the design of the gas storage facility which will include gas compression and treatment. Costain is handling the design of the leaching facilities with the support of ILF. When complete, the total capacity is expected to be 400 million cubic meters of working gas which will supply the whole of the UK for two days
