DMT in Essen develops wireless monitoring system.
Online machine diagnosis via W-LAN
Industry sets a high innovation pace in the slipstream of information technology. The use of wireless transfer is simply made for many industrial applications and is becoming increasingly widespread. In view of this background DMT in Essen has developed a W-LAN-based system for online machine diagnosis.
At many companies it is complicated in some cases to access the machines and equipment that have to be monitored using measuring instruments. Long distances are necessary for master cable, equipment has to be provided, cable routes and ditches have to be laid and openings made. Rapidly increasing copper prices combined with installation and cabling costs often exceed the system costs and the required engineering.
Use of a wireless-based solution is considerably more efficient and offers greater savings potential. The DMT system, called “C300_Wireless”, is installed (optionally protected for use in explosive atmospheres) in a compact switch cabinet with a transmission module. The installation work involved with this monitoring system is reduced to mounting the measuring sensor, installing the switchgear unit and laying the spur cable. If a failure occurs in the data link, the measured values are stored locally until the connection to a control station has been restored. Besides the advantage that long copper cable or optical-fibre cable lines do not have to be laid, the high degree of W-LAN standardization provides users definite investment protection in comparison to proprietary radio solutions.
Machine noises are recorded
The heart of the system, online machine diagnosis, is still based on the tried and tested method of measuring and evaluating structure-borne noise signals and intelligently linking them to process data. At the control station level wear, faulty installation, inadequate maintenance and improper loads are evaluated and visualized. A central overview of all monitored machines and equipment is provided for. The staff can read off alarm values, general status data, spectrums, trends and inspection reports. In addition, machine noises can be recorded and stored as an audio file. As a result, the diagnostician in the office has an additional aid for direct personal assessment without having to cover long distances within the plant.
Enables optimized maintenance practices
The W-LAN monitoring system measures in exactly the same way as a conventional cable-based unit. However, it makes it possible to extend online machine diagnosis to areas where access was previously not available or involved excessive costs. This opens up new options for users in performing maintenance oriented to the state of the machine. DMT provides its clients with support ranging from project planning, installation, parameterization, staff training and all the way to service.
