Siemens supplies high-speed direct drive for gas compressor in the United KingdomThe Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has received an order from Rolls-Royce Power Generation plc, London, Great Britain, to supply a direct drive for a gas compressor in Felindre, South Wales. The final customer is the British gas supplier, National Grid (NG), London. The low-maintenance electric drive can be adjusted exactly to different requirements with the help of a variable speed controller. Commissioning is planned for September 2008. The order volume is about six million euros. The new compressor station at Felindre is a vital part of the expansion of the UK national gas transmission system. It will enable natural gas from two new LNG receiving terminals currently under construction in Milford Haven to be connected to the 7000km national transmission system operated by National Grid. Siemens will supply the electric drive system for the gas compressor. The gearless variable-speed drive has an output of 35 megawatts and its speed can be varied between 2280 and 5040 rpm. This also enables the compressor output to be precisely adapted to changing requirements. The electric drive has low maintenance with high availability and enables easy starting and stopping of the compressor. The electric drive has a low noise level an produces no NOX or CO2 emissions.Siemens is responsible for the design, manufacture and supply of the complete drive system, including transformer, line filter, frequency converter, synchronous motor and cooling system. Siemens will also commission the system. Further information at Posted April 23, 2007
