To date MAN TURBO has supplied 40 units of
this special compressor type for gas storage purposes, making the company
the world’s only experienced supplier for this application. In the UK,
virtually all gas storage facilities that operate turbocompressors are
equipped with machine sets from MAN TURBO.
The high level of reliability and virtually
maintenance-free, long-term operation of these machine sets, produced by
MAN TURBO Switzerland, are persuasive arguments for customers, because
short reaction times and extensive machine availability are key
requirements in gas storage.
Gas storage facilities act as buffers,
helping to overcome supply shortfalls and guaranteeing a rapid, targeted
supply of the fossil fuel round the clock. The gas is stored during
periods of low demand and is made available when demand increases.
Suitable storage facilities are exhausted gas fields or underground salt
caverns, which have to be washed out for this purpose. The job of the
compressors is to even out the pressure differences in the storage caverns
and pipelines. They therefore have to operate with a high degree of
flexibility over all speed ranges, manage different pressures and volumes
and offer short start-up and shutdown times as well as being highly
productive.
MAN TURBO’s compressor systems meet all
these requirements, and so the company can continue to play a major role
in the expanding British gas storage market. Several new plants are
planned there in the next few years, because the UK can no longer cover
its gas needs from its own North Sea gas production. Suitable reserves
must therefore be created on a far larger scale than before.
Technical advantages of the HOFIM Sealed:
HOFIM Sealed is the name of an electrically
driven high-frequency motor with magnetic bearings and up to two
turbocompressors respectively on the end of the motor. The system as a
whole operates in a hermetically sealed casing (High Speed Oil Free
Integrated Motor compressor). It thus operates effectively without the
complex interaction of gas sealing system, lube oil system, gears and
couplings that is traditionally responsible for most service interruptions.
