Since the 1980s, intensive work has been done to enable drilling fluids to meet constantly increasing requirements. They are to remain as fluid as possible when subjected to high pressure and extreme temperature fluctuations ­ even in the case of highly deviated and deepwater applications. They must be fully pumpable even in deep water, and they must lubricate the drill bit in a large variety of rock formations. Finally, they should be environmentally compatible and biodegradable ­ and safe for people and equipment.

The original ester based on renewable natural resources for the formulation of drilling fluids comes from Cognis, which developed the first ester-based drilling fluid systems in collaboration with Baroid. The products have now been successfully used for over a decade on drilling rigs all over the world. Cognis also makes its esters available to all other service companies wishing to develop their own drilling fluids on the basis of the original ester.
